Welcome
Once a week, the community of First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown gathers for worship. We come together to immerse ourselves in the presence of God and to intentionally notice and celebrate what God is doing in us, in each other, and in our world. In our service, we try to honor and experience many of the ways people have expressed their worship through time and throughout the world.
We Read Scripture
The Bible is the written text that the Christian community holds at its center and is a revelation of God's love. The reading of scripture is a central part of our worship and we attempt to make the Scriptures understandable and relevant.
We Sing
We sing hymns that come from many time periods and we sing songs that come from our current culture. We try to have diversity in our music that reflects the diversity of God's people and of our congregation. Music is a way that we can express our joy, elation, and sadness to God; it is a way that we bring our voices together and become one community under God.
We Pray
Prayer is how we express our hopes, hurts, joys, confusion, questions, and sadness to God. During Sunday worship, we pray in a variety of different ways. Sometimes one person prays aloud for us all; sometimes we sit in silent prayer, expressing our individual prayers to God while sitting in community with one another. We always say a prayer aloud together that has come to be known as the "Lord's Prayer". During the service, we pray for each other, our church, and our world.
We Offer Our Gifts To God
We believe that sacrifice is an important part of a relationship with God, and this takes place in many different ways for different people. On Sunday morning, we offer our gifts to God by praying with our whole heart and letting go of the other things that might be taking up our attention. We offer our gifts by greeting our neighbors in love and by engaging with the words we sing. We also have a time to offer our financial gifts, and we do this not because it's tradition or because it is the "right" thing to do, but because by giving financially we remember that God is the true source of all life and is the sole owner of all aspects of life, including our finances.
Our worship together is a time to listen and respond to God, and also to listen and respond to each other. Sunday morning is when we come together as people struggling and rejoicing to follow Jesus Christ.
